Experiencing a Screen Reader

Victor just showed us how he uses a screen reader to access content. Now, it's your turn to try out using a screen reader! For this exercise, you'll head to a sample page and use a modified version of ChromeVox to discover a hidden word.

ChromeVox Lite

ChromeVox Lite is a minimal but functioning screen reader written in JavaScript and directly injected into the page. To navigate with ChromeVox Lite, you will need to use the buttons at the bottom of the screen. If you try to just click on the button with your mouse the page will lose focus and you'll have to refresh and start over. So… no cheating!

Instructions

  1. Head over to this sample page and click on Enable ChromeVox Lite in the bottom right-hand corner.

  2. Look over the control panel at the bottom of the screen to control the screen reader. The screen reader has minimal functionality, but we can explore the page using the previous and next buttons.

  3. Using the control panel, navigate to the I love accessibility button and click it. A word will appear on the screen!
